CyberSecurity Awareness Month October 2021

Why is Cybersecurity important?

Hackers and malicious actors are continuously prying on the vulnerabilities of systems and human behavior to break into private networks and corporate accounts.  Even though we have the latest tools and cybersecurity technologies to identify and recuperate from  cyber threats, humans remain the most vulnerable target of cybercriminals.

Cyber attackers take advantage of human negligence and manipulate the users through various techniques. Cybersecurity awareness thus plays a pivotal role in preparing users to identify and combat potential cyber-attacks which come in myriad forms.

The Human Factor

Humans are often the weakest link in cybersecurity. However, they can also be the first and the strongest line of defense. By being aware of the cybersecurity basics and playing your part in evading cyber threats, you can help build a stronger cyber immune culture.

Here are some of the basic lookouts that can help in staying secure against cyber-attacks.

Strong Authentication

Use strong methods and tools for authentication. Since passwords are the most common methods of authentication, ensure that you use strong and complex passwords. Use passphrases with a combination of alphanumeric and special characters.  Wherever possible,  use multi-factor authentication, one-time passwords, biometrics, etc

Encrypt your data

Data is the most critical asset of digital systems. Any leakage of your personal or company's sensitive information can have dire consequences. There may be financial, reputational, and compliance risks. As a result, ensure that your systems and devices are encrypted, and that
your files are secure and password-protected.

Keep your Software updated

Maintain up-to-date versions of your apps, software, and operating systems. Security software such as antivirus, anti-malware, firewalls, etc., need to be kept updated as well.

Do not share personal details on social media

Social media platforms are a great way to stay connected. However,  cybercriminals are leveraging these platforms to channelize their evil motives. Social engineering attacks are rampant these days. Share responsibly on social media and be careful of whom you allow into  your network.

Keep your network secure

Ensure that your WiFi network is secure, and that others on your network are allowed access after proper authentication. Do not share sensitive information such as  bank account details, official emails, or business plans on open wifi. Hackers can easily intercept open networks and snoop on your sensitive information.

Click with Caution

Do not click on suspicious links within emails, messages, and online posts. Scammers use various techniques to trick you to click on malicious links. These links often redirect you to risky websites or download malware on your devices.
